In this engaging session, leadership expert and author Nathan Young reframes what it truly means to serve as a Second-in-Command. Drawing on insights from his book How to Be Second and his One Second podcast, Nathan challenges the long-held assumption that the “Number Two” role is merely a stepping stone to the top. Instead, he reveals why COOs, GMs, Chiefs of Staff, and other Seconds are uniquely wired to serve as the organizational keystone, balancing vision with execution, stabilizing leadership duos, and driving sustainable performance.

Through real-world examples and practical frameworks, participants will explore the power of followership, the dynamics that make leadership partnerships thrive, and how embracing the identity of Second-in-Command can unlock greater impact, clarity, and organizational health.

CPE Learning Objectives:

  • Differentiate the unique leadership identity of the Second-in-Command and explain how roles such as COO, GM, and Chief of Staff function as organizational “keystones” rather than transitional positions.
  • Analyze the dynamics of effective leadership duos by identifying the complementary strengths, communication patterns, and decision-making structures that enable visionary leaders and their Seconds to operate as a high-performing partnership.
  • Apply practical frameworks for followership and operational leadership to strengthen alignment, improve organizational balance, and enhance execution within their own teams or leadership structures.
