This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) reporting for business professionals. It covers the fundamentals of ESG as a corporate framework, explains why sustainability initiatives drive long-term business value, and examines the evolving regulatory landscape—with particular focus on California's climate disclosure laws (SB 253 and SB 261). The session addresses practical considerations for compliance, including greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory development, internal controls, data management systems, and third-party assurance requirements, equipping executives and their teams to navigate the growing complexity of sustainability reporting.

Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Define ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and explain how sustainability reporting contributes to long-term organizational value.
  2. Identify the key requirements and timelines of California climate disclosure regulations SB 253 and SB 261, including which companies are affected and what reporting is mandated.
  3. Describe the process for developing a GHG emissions inventory aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol, including Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
  4. Recognize best practices for establishing internal controls, data management systems, and audit trails to support assurance-ready ESG reporting.
  5. Outline the steps organizations should take to prepare for ESG compliance, including forming cross-functional teams, engaging assurance providers, and building internal expertise.
