Join us to explore the transformation of Hazelwood Green and the community-centered vision guiding its redevelopment. Participants will learn about the neighborhood’s history, the inclusive strategies shaping its future, and the role of partners such as Carnegie Mellon University and the CMU Robotics Innovation Center at Hazelwood Green, including the investment and collaboration that brought the robotics facility to the site. The session will also highlight economic, environmental, and workforce initiatives while identifying opportunities for leaders and organizations to collaborate in advancing equitable growth and long-term community impact.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the history and community-centered vision of Hazelwood Green:
    Participants will examine the historical context and demographic evolution of the Hazelwood neighborhood, including past economic shifts and community challenges, and explore how the Hazelwood Green initiative prioritizes inclusion, equity, and community benefit. This objective will highlight successful inclusion programs, resident engagement strategies, and partnerships among organizations to ensure development benefits local residents.
  • Analyze the economic, environmental, and innovation strategy shaping Hazelwood’s future:
    Participants will analyze the economic model behind Hazelwood Green’s revitalization, including how public and private investment catalyzes job creation, innovation, and neighborhood development. This includes examining the role of anchor institutions such as the Carnegie Mellon University and its CMU Robotics Innovation Center at Hazelwood Green, as well as sustainability initiatives such as green infrastructure, solar energy deployment, tree and landscape programs, and riverfront ecological restoration. Participants will also explore how transportation planning, workforce development programs, and supportive services are being coordinated to create an inclusive innovation district.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration and community impact:
    Participants will identify ways individuals, organizations, and civic leaders can support the continued success of Hazelwood’s initiatives. This includes understanding collaborations around transportation access, workforce pipelines, and community services, and exploring actionable pathways for engagement such as board service, philanthropy, advocacy, and partnership development that help advance equitable economic growth and long-term sustainability for Hazelwood residents.
